tastytrade for Vertical Spreads: Fees, Features and Trade-offs

Published June 1, 2025

Source-checked October 3, 2026 · U.S. brokerage research

The opening-side commission model is straightforward. The complete trading decision is more than a commission calculation.

tastytrade documents options strategy tools and an opening-side commission schedule. Those are useful facts to compare. They do not establish superior fills, easier learning or a better return. This review separates the published terms from the checks still needed for your own account.

Stock/ETF options$1 to open

Per contract; opening commissions capped at $10 per leg.

Closing commission$0

Applicable exchange, clearing and regulatory fees still remain.

Understand the contract count and the cap

The published stock/ETF options schedule is not “$1 for the entire leg regardless of size.” Contract quantity matters until the per-leg opening cap is reached. Broad-based index options use a separate row; do not transfer the stock/ETF cap to them.

Scroll across the table to see all columns.

Illustrative opening commissions for a two-leg stock/ETF vertical
Position size Calculation Opening commission
1 spread: 1 contract on each leg min($1 × 1, $10) × 2 legs $2
5 spreads: 5 contracts on each leg min($1 × 5, $10) × 2 legs $10
20 spreads: 20 contracts on each leg min($1 × 20, $10) × 2 legs $20

These are commission-only calculations for one opening order, not estimates of profit or an all-in bill. They exclude third-party fees, bid–ask spreads, slippage, borrowing and taxes. Account-service, exercise and assignment charges require the full fee schedule. Repeated opening orders should not be treated as though one cap covers an entire day.

What the documentation supports

tastytrade’s options page describes preset strategies and risk-analysis tools. Its permissions guide describes Limited, Basic and The Works access, with eligibility and approval requirements. Check which strategies are permitted in the exact account you intend to use.

Our interpretation: the published opening cap is relevant when comparing larger contract quantities. That does not make a larger trade appropriate or show that the broker is cheaper after every fee and achieved execution price.

What this review does not establish

Documented considerations

  • An explicit stock/ETF options commission formula.
  • Options-oriented strategy and analysis tools.
  • Published permissions and suitability requirements.

Checks still required

  • Whether your account and intended spread will be approved.
  • How comfortably you can use the actual platform.
  • Current simulation/demo availability and its product coverage.
  • Live fill quality and support responsiveness, which we have not tested.

We could not verify current simulated-trading availability from the accessible live help page, so this update does not repeat the older article’s categorical “no paper trading” claim. Ask the provider if simulation is a requirement.

Read the exit rules before the entry ticket

Learn how the broker handles expiration, an assigned short option, a resulting stock position and insufficient buying power. A payoff estimate assumes a particular position remains intact; changing one leg can change the exposure. A low closing commission is not a promise that an order will fill.

A useful fit test

Start with a fictional order, without submitting it: identify both legs, quantity, expiration, net debit or credit and the cost preview. Then locate the close-position workflow and the written policy for an option that may be exercised or assigned. If an essential step remains unclear, do not treat a pricing advantage as a substitute for understanding it.

How this guide was researched

Updated October 3, 2026 using the linked U.S. provider documents and investor-protection resources. This is a public-document review, not a hands-on account test. We have not measured fill quality, support response times or app usability, and do not assign star ratings. Provider pages are evidence of stated terms—not independent proof of performance.

Broker links on this page are direct information links without referral codes. InvestPips displays advertising elsewhere on the site; ads are separate from this comparison. Check current terms before acting. Read our editorial and advertising notes.

What changed in this update

Removed the unsupported 8.5/10 score, claims of extremely fast execution and the statement that closing trades have no fees. Corrected the opening commission from per-leg shorthand to per-contract pricing with a per-leg cap. The existing URL and original publication date were retained.
